Two Back of the Yards businesses make SEED Chicago financing round

The Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council has sponsored two local business initiatives that have been accepted in this round of SEED Chicago’s financing program. SEED Chicago highlights small businesses and community development projects that will grow jobs, facilitate economic activity, revitalize communities or promote education and training. SEED Chicago is an initiative of Mayor Emanuel’s Plan for Economic Growth & Jobs, developed through a partnership with ACCION Chicago and World Business Chicago to assess and expand Chicago‘s economy.

The two local projects that have been accepted by SEED Chicago are:

Bringing internet cafés to underserved communities is the goal of Alexa Martin and her partners in LEVEL, a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 towards the purchase of computers that aims to help level the playing field in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

LEVEL plans to set up shop in a storefront in Back of the Yards and promote its services to young people, who typically have less access to technology and the internet than those in other neighborhoods.

“Two fundamental things that affected my life were books and the internet,” said Martin in the Kickstarter video. “[But] access isn‘t the same across the board.” The new café plans to offer extended hours, a safe environment, food and convenience, she says. The Plant Mural

The goal of this project is to create a mural to pay homage to the

diversity and history of the Back of the Yards community by engaging local artists and youth. The Back of the Yards was once one of the city‘s most vibrant and industrious neighborhoods, adjacent to a convergence of railroad lines that catered to hundreds of meat packing plants processing cattle and pigs for a greater portion of the country. As the meatpacking industry declined, the neighborhood faced physical and economic deterioration. This mural aims to contribute to the development of civic pride and acknowledge the new wave of economic growth in the Back of the Yards community. This mural- nearly 3,000 square feet large- will remind Chicagoans of its industrious roots in Back of the Yards.

LEVEL
